Summer often brings travel, outdoor events, concerts, family gatherings, and recreational activities that many people look forward to all year. While these activities create enjoyable experiences, they can also expose people to higher noise levels than they encounter during other seasons. Repeated exposure to loud environments may gradually contribute to hearing loss without obvious warning signs. Many individuals do not recognize hearing changes until communication becomes noticeably difficult. Scheduling a hearing test can help identify early concerns before hearing problems interfere with daily life. Across Clearwater, FL, more people are becoming aware of how seasonal activities may influence long-term hearing health. Noise-related hearing damage rarely occurs from a single moment in time. Instead, repeated exposure gradually affects the sensitive structures inside the ear. Summer activities often increase that exposure through louder environments and more frequent social interaction. Outdoor Concerts and Festivals Can Expose Ears to Harmful Noise People still go to outdoor concerts, festivals, and sporting events that are among the loudest venues in the summer months. And the sound […]

A sudden hearing loss (SSHL) occurs over the course of a few days. It’s important to seek medical attention immediately if you experience sudden hearing loss, as prompt treatment can increase the chances of recovery. In some cases, hearing aids or cochlear implants may be recommended for those who do not fully regain their hearing. What Sudden Hearing Loss IsSudden hearing loss is a loss of hearing of greater than 30 dB in three contiguous frequencies. SSHL can occur in one or both ears and can be accompanied by tinnitus, vertigo, or a feeling of fullness in the affected ear. SSHL is something that can occur at any age, but it’s more common in people aged 50 to 60 years old. One study that was conducted about SSHL revealed that males were more likely to develop it than females, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.6:1. Additionally, the incidence was higher in the Northeast region of the United States compared to other regions. Sensorineural SSHL is more common than bilateral. In […]

There are many reasons someone may be suffering from hearing loss. While some of these reasons are understandable, others aren’t always obvious. Knowing what may be causing your hearing difficulties is important so take a few moments to check some of the more unexpected risk factors out for yourself. 6 Unexpected Reasons for Hearing Loss When you hear about someone losing their hearing, you probably think of some of the most common reasons for this to occur (e.g., aging, injury, excessive noise exposure, diabetes). However, there are also some shocking reasons why this happens. Sleep Apnea Several studies have been published over the past few years in which sleep apnea has been strongly linked to hearing loss. Medical professionals believe that snoring causes the inner ear to receive less blood, and unfortunately, this area is responsible for properly processing sound. Excessive Drinking When you drink excessive amounts of alcohol, you’re setting yourself up for health problems like heart disease and stroke. Your brain needs more time to process sound, so […]

For seniors whose back starts to hurt on a regular basis should know they’re not alone. In fact, about 6 million older adults in the United States are living with chronic back pain. Gbolahan Okubadejo, M.D., an orthopedic spine surgeon says this is because as we age we lose fluid in our discs which causes them to collapse making us feel stiff. Of course, lifestyle habits increase the likelihood of this happening. Some of these culprits are quite surprising. Uninterrupted Sitting Although seniors probably know that sitting too much isn’t good for their health what they may not realize is that it can also result in back pain. This is because when immobile for a while a cycle of pain and spasms will start with the end result being a painful spine. PM&R published a small study in which researchers measured the discs of seniors who were sedentary and discovered that sitting for as few as four hours suffer an increased risk of back pain. This is why it’s important […]

There’s been a “mega heatwave” in the western areas of the United States (e.g. Arizona, California, Utah, Wyoming) recently. This has caused planes to be grounded, people to stay indoors, and a rise in health-related illnesses such as dehydration. Unfortunately, the older you get the less you realize how hot it is because your body isn’t as hydrated so it doesn’t sweat as much. Nevertheless, people over 65 make up 36% of heat-related deaths because heat is more of a threat to them. This is because many of them have health conditions (e.g. heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes) that make them more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Many of the medications that are used to stay healthy also make it more difficult for people to cool off. Since this heatwave isn’t even coming in the middle of the summer, some people are concerned. They believe this is something we’re going to have to get accustomed to. Things to Watch Out For Things like heatstroke and dehydration make it very challenging […]
